Data governance

Data governance is the set of rules for how your business looks after its data. Who can see client details? Who keeps the product list accurate? How long do you keep old records? What can AI tools read? Large organisations write long policies. A small team needs one page and one person who owns it, usually the owner or manager. For an agency, the page might say client files live in the shared drive, contractors get access per project, and access ends when the project does. For a charity, it might cover donor details and who can export them. Simple rules, followed every time, protect you better than a long policy nobody reads.
